Wine Tour: Breggo Cellars Taking advantage of the various climate in California's Anderson Valley, Breggo Cellars is producing great red and white wines.
Tucked in an idyllic spot just outside of Boonville, California, Breggo Cellars presents a portfolio that must be tasted to be believed. The wines are made from premium Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay sourced from the finest vineyards across Anderson Valley. Winemaker Ryan Hodgins, who agreed to be part of the team to start the winery in 2005, couldn’t believe his good fortune.
"When I first saw the list of vineyards I would get to work with, I couldn’t say no," Hodgins says. The Anderson Valley is about 15 miles long. The deep end of the valley is at the town of Navarro, where it is quite cool. To the southeast, the town of Boonville sits in the warm end of the valley. "Pinot Noir grown around Navarro is quite different than that grown in Boonville," Hodgins explains. "Navarro’s cool climate gives the fruit a spicy herbal character, while the warmer Boonville fruit is all about black cherry. We source from both ends of Anderson Valley and find that blending the spicy Navarro fruit with the riper Boonville fruit is key to our Anderson Valley Pinot Noir’s success." Hodgins was producing the Pinot Noir in a less-than-optimal space when he met Winemaker Cliff Lede, owner of Cliff Lede Vineyards in the famed Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley. Cliff, who owed his quick success to Bordeaux varietals, was intrigued with Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, especially Breggo’s. Cliff turned to Cliff Lede Vineyards President Jack Bittner and together they came up with a win-win situation. They purchased Breggo Cellars, upgraded the winemaking facility, and bought the Savoy Vineyard, one of the key resources for Breggo wine grapes. These efforts have won the admiration of renowned wine critic, Robert Parker, who notes, "One of the best discoveries I have made in recent years is Breggo Cellars where [they are] making some excellent whites as well as gorgeous Pinots." The tasting room has a great view of the cellar and guests can often watch Hodgins and his team working as they sample Breggo Cellar’s exceptional wines.
