It's much easier to keep your kids protected if they love the gear they're wearing.

Squinting is another sign of poor eyesight, as are headaches, light sensitivity and sitting too close to the TV.”
It’s hard for moms to find the balance between being laid back and cautious. You want to make sure your kids are protected, though you know a paranoid focus on safety won’t be effective. How do you guard them from danger without stressing yourself out all the time? Outfit your kids with products they will want to wear that will also give you peace of mind.

Sun Protection

Make sure to protect your children's skin from sun damage. If their skin is unprotected from harmful UVA or UVB rays, they will have a greater chance of developing heat rash and even skin cancer. For younger kids, sometimes the best kind of sunscreen is the easiest one they’ll let you apply, whether that’s lotion, gel, spray or stick. Look for the Skin Cancer Foundation’s blue square Seal of Recommendation when deciding which product is right for you. For babies, consider Aveeno Baby Natural Protection face stick and for toddlers and older try Alba Botanica Very Emollient Kids non-greasy lotion sunscreen.

If your daughter is a little older and wearing makeup, consider Chanel’s UV Essentiel Multi-Protection Daily UV Care SPF 50. This sunscreen is ideal to wear under makeup, and the brand’s luxurious reputation may entice her to actually wear it. Kiehl’s is another go-to for sun protective products. Its tinted moisturizer has a SPF 50 and is great for everyday use as foundation, which will make her skin glow and protect it from the sun’s rays.

Eye Accessories

If your child is misbehaving at school, it could be because he is bored because he can’t see the chalkboard. Squinting is another sign of poor eyesight, as are headaches, light sensitivity and sitting too close to the TV. If you notice any of these signs, it may be time to visit an optometrist for professional advice. In addition to helping him see better, prescription glasses can help prevent further degradation of his sight.

That may be important to you (and your son or daughter later on), but the initial prospect of wearing glasses may come off as uncool—you know how kids are. So when helping your child pick out a pair of glasses, steer them toward the brand name frames that will help them feel comfortable without sacrificing what’s in style. For example, Ray-Ban specializes in fashionable, high-quality eyewear that appeals to many styles. Its frames have a classic and effortlessly cool look most kids will gravitate toward. Polo Prep and Vogue Kids are also brands to consider, with the former offering an Ivy League contemporary look and the latter many bold and bright options.

Recreational Gear

Protect your child’s noggin from injury while he or she indulges in their favorite recreational sports. Whether your kids are avid skaters, skiers, snowboarders or cyclists, they should always wear protective head gear. Research their favorite skater or snow-sport athlete and see what kind of helmet their idol wears. For example, Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn often gives her fans a chance to design her helmet before a big race. Remember at the 2014 Winter Olympic games when she sported a snow leopard on her head? If your kid knows anything about downhill skiing, he or she remembers. Use a site like InkwellHelmets.com to design a similar custom helmet. Your kid will be proud to show it off in front of their friends and be thankful that you helped them imitate their idol.

Technology

Your digital native craves the newest technology, as they can utilize it for their creative pursuits, entertainment, school and their social life. Once you feel your child is old enough, provide him or her with a smartphone, as it's beneficial for their safety and gives them a way to communicate with you in case of an emergency or any last-minute changes in their schedule. For added safety, set parental locks on the phone to ensure your kid doesn’t engage with inappropriate content on the internet or become involved in any cyber bullying. In addition, try an app like Find My Kids—Footprints, Find My Friends or Family Tracker to keep tabs on your child’s location using GPS. Doing so will keep your mind at ease knowing whether or not they are in safe, pre-approved locations or not.
