The Hope Family Aspires a Region
Chuck Hope planted one of the first vineyards in Paso Robles and the family has been trailblazing ever since.

The name Treana symbolizes a trinity of the sun, soil, and ocean—the elements needed to produce premium wine grapes. Treana was introduced in 1996 when Austin Hope became the second generation Hope to lead the family business as they began producing their own wine. Austin’s father, Chuck Hope, planted one of the first vineyards in Paso Robles in 1978 and was instrumental in establishing the region’s solid reputation for high-quality grape growing.

Austin grew up sharing his father’s passion and now, as winemaker, he oversees all aspects of the business for the Austin Hope Collection of wines including Treana, Austin Hope, Liberty School, Troublemaker, and Love & Hope brands.

While the Hopes are steeped in tradition, they are also known for blazing new trails. Austin believes that Paso Robles’ diversity is its biggest strength. He is a champion of the anti-snob approach to wine drinking and embraces new technology and non-traditional marketing methods. Treana, the Hopes’ first label, is one example.

"We made a very bold decision to launch Treana White as a Rhône-style blend in the 1990s," Austin says. "With the launch of Treana Red in 1996, we helped inspire the now thriving genre of distinct Paso blends, which incorporate both Rhône and Bordeaux varietals. Several Paso Robles producers have since made a real name for themselves with these types of blends."

Actually, Austin’s family winery is one such producer. The wines routinely receive high scores from major publications including Wine Enthusiast, which awarded 93 points to the estate-grown 2013 Austin Hope Syrah, 92 points to the 2014 Treana Red, and 91 points to the 2014 Treana Blanc.

In the spring of 2015, the Hopes renovated their Treana Tasting Cellar to create a comfortable lounge-style setting that embodies the winery’s spirit. Situated on the Hope Family Estate Vineyard in the Templeton Gap District, the Treana Tasting Cellar highlights the luxurious Treana wines as well as estate grown Rhône-style wines bottled under the Austin Hope label. Terroir, family, and innovation. Perhaps that’s what Treana stands for as well.
