Sharing the Special Moments: How to Create a Family Blog
3 easy steps to get started on the perfect family blog.

Glaymzhan Abdugalimov
Getting your family blog off the ground is a simple process once you have the basics down.

Decide what you and your family love most, and create sub-pages for your most prominent interests.”
Family blogs are a very popular genre of online publications. There are many mom blogs that showcase a family’s journey of newborn birth to toddlerdom and beyond. These sites help connect mothers with their peers and allow a general forum for any parenting advice or questions. They also showcase some of the hippest new family fashion trends and childcare products. Family blogs are also used as a way to stay connected with long-distance friends and relatives. Here are some of the ways you can make your family blog stand out from the others:

Webscape

It is important your site has an aesthetic that is akin to your family’s and serves as a good representation of your style. Many blog platforms, such as Squarespace, WordPress and Blogger, come with built-in page layout designs that are eye-catching and fun. Love Taza (also known as, The Rockstar Diaries) is one of the most renowned family blogs. The site is designed with Taza’s family’s favorite colors and a typeface that compliments her feminine-modern style. Her family is colorful in their activities, apparel and spirit, and the blog reflects that. Decide what you and your family love most, and create sub-pages for your most prominent interests. Taza and her family have a deep love for their city, so they’ve created a number of NYC guides that showcase activities for families. They are also self-proclaimed foodies and have a section where they talk about their favorite, family eateries.

Photography and Video

Photographic content is what sets a mediocre blog apart from a fantastic blog. Invest in a digital SLR for high-quality photos of your family’s exciting activities and precious moments. Your photos should capture the big picture of the family all together, and also the small moments that a mother finds dearest. For example, if you are out on your first family camping trip, capturing your little one in her first pair of rain boots is an endearing, narrative moment. It is likely you won’t always remember your camera for those special, blog-able moments. Since smartphone camera technology is rapidly improving and your phone’s camera is more readily accessible, it is OK to use a few of these photos in your blog content. Video content can vibrantly bring a story to life and is a wonderful addition for your blog. If you’re unable to capture high-quality video of a place your family has visited or would love a video background for your blog, stock video is a great option.

Written Content

Written content is incredibly important as it gives a more in-depth story to your photographs. It is recommended that you keep your written content to 500 words or less in each blog post. Share anecdotes about the small and big moments you encounter as a mother. Try to make your written content as genuine as possible—focus on the positive, but don’t be afraid to bring up questions you’ve been grappling with or any motherly concerns. Honesty will allow you to connect further with your audience—it just depends on how much you wish to share. If you’re hoping to reach a larger audience, humor is a prominent draw for readers. Kelly Oxford, a housewife from Canada, began tweeting short, humorous quips about motherhood and quickly gained hundreds of thousands of followers. Her genuine and funny outlook was something other mothers could relate to and the general public found entertainment in her honest comments on family life. If you don’t have any narrative story to share, write short and cute captions underneath each of your posted photographs, which will give them added context.
